Hello guys and welcome back for another round of movie reviews with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies!
So, I wasn't able to do the review for this movie last night but I have a little spare time on my hands now and I can do the review because the preparations for the Easter Sunday are already on the way and I am going to be very busy for the rest of the day.
Before I start I will give you guys a bit of a synopsis for you guys:
Decorated veteran Will Sharp (Emmy winner Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), desperate for money to cover his wife’s medical bills, asks for help from the one person he knows he shouldn’t—his adoptive brother Danny (Oscar® nominee Jake Gyllenhaal). A charismatic career criminal, Danny instead offers him a score: the biggest bank heist in Los Angeles history: $32 million. With his wife’s survival on the line, Will can’t say no. But when their getaway goes spectacularly wrong, the desperate brothers hijack an ambulance with a wounded cop clinging to life and ace EMT Cam Thompson (Eiza González) onboard. In a high-speed pursuit that never stops, Will and Danny must evade a massive, city-wide law enforcement response, keep their hostages alive, and somehow try not to kill each other, all while executing the most insane escape L.A. has ever seen.
Well, that was actually a pretty long synopsis, not gonna lie :)).
I, personally, am a Michael Bay fan, I really enjoy his movies, the Transformers movies are a guilty pleasure of mine, except for the 5th one, I really did not enjoy that one but, except for that, I like all of his movies, even this one.
When you go and see a Michael Bay movie, you don't expect to see some serious, deep and well written dialogue or script, you don't expect to see complex and well developed characters or a story that makes sense or a little bit of logic, you don't expect to see any of that and with this movie, you don't get those things but, instead, the movie delivers in any other department. It offers plenty of action sequences, some filmed really well, with some gorgeous and awesome shots, some not so well, with weird and not that exciting drone camera shots that really do nothing and offer nothing of substance. Less explosions that I would have expect from a Michael Bay movie, there are in total of 3 explosions, that really are not that big as well.
The whole tone of the movie, with some great car speed action and some exciting car speed chases, reminded me of the classic movie Speed, with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. It does have some elements from that movie and I really enjoyed that. Not very original but, still, very enjoyable. The humor really lands, most of the time, is decent and the jokes are really funny and amusing. Also, Michael Bay drops hints on his previous movies like Bad Boys, The Rock and one that I think it was a wink for the first Transformers movie and I really liked that he stopped at three because it would have been to much if he passed the rule of three :)).
Overall, it is one of the Michael Bay movies that offers less the action thrills than others in his movie catalogue, is longer that it should have been, you could have made this movie into an hour and 40 minutes and it would have been perfect because there are some scenes that really could have been cut but it does deliver on the action and it's still enjoyable to watch. 6.8/10
