Hello guys and welcome back for another round of movie reviews with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies!
So guys, this review was originally scheduled to be posted on Sunday but some of my plans got shifted so I did not have the opportunity to see the movie on Saturday and what I did was that I went today to see the movie, after my work schedule ended. Before I share my opinions about the movie with you guys, a bit of a synopsis is in order, I think:
Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot’s Egyptian vacation aboard a glamorous river steamer turns into a terrifying search for a murderer when a picture-perfect couple’s idyllic honeymoon is tragically cut short. Set against an epic landscape of sweeping desert vistas and the majestic Giza pyramids, this tale of unbridled passion and incapacitating jealousy features a cosmopolitan group of impeccably dressed travelers, and enough wicked twists and turns to leave audiences guessing until the final, shocking denouement.
Following the Murder on the Orient Express , Branagh reintroduces us, once again, to his interpretation of the Belgian super detective Hercule Poirot, in this tale of love, deception and, especially, murder.
Personally, I am a fan of murder mysteries and, in general, the Hercule Poirot series with David Suchet and, of course, I really enjoyed the first movie from Branagh with the famous detective. With this one, I can really tell that Branagh is very invested and very passionate about this material because you can see the affection and the attention to details he puts into these movies. I really enjoyed this one as well, it has got everything that an old school murder mystery should have. Plus, everything feels very old school but very pretty to look at, not by the amazing casting alone but also by the beautiful and amazing visuals that this movie has. It contains some astonishing shots and panoramas, giving the movie a more majestic look and a very stylish feel.
The movie is very elegant, as well, from the exquisite choices of clothing to the set pieces and locations of the movie. It has a good pacing, not to fast, not to slow but just the right amount that makes the movie worthwhile. It can get dead in some occasions, pun intended, but it is immediately enlivened again by the amazing cast and the excellent performance from Branagh as Poirot. The sound design is also worth a mention because it combines perfectly with the aura of mystery that oozes throughout the movie.
Speaking of mystery, the one thing that might tick some people off, might be the fact that there are so many hints and clues as to who committed the murder until the discovery, which I half guessed, that you might lose your patience and just say to yourself ''just tell me who the killer is''. Also, I would like that, someday, one of these types of movies might change the ending and not have, again, all of the suspects in a room and the detective to explain his ultimate theories and ending with discovering the actual killer. Knives Out, which is a version of a Hercule Poirot murder mystery, did the exact same ending. Maybe I am asking for a lot but a bit of originality with the endings might work.
Overall, despite some little flaws, I really enjoyed the movie and it's story, filled with some good twists and some not good ones but I especially loved the way it was shot and the way it looked. Branagh really knows, amongst other things, to shoot a movie. A very old school, elegant and beautiful murder mystery. 7.2/10
OK guys, that was my review for this one. Next up in the pipeline has to be Uncharted, which I hope that I can see it this coming weekend, even though I have to work. Also, I am considering reviewing the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie, that comes on Netflix this Friday but I will see if I have the time.
Until then, take care, stay safe, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing!
