Hello guys and welcome back for another round of movie reviews with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies!!

Guys, a little announcement before I begin the review. FB just notified me that on this very day, 3 years ago, I have decided to build this site, which I launched on January 2019. So, in January of next year, I will be celebrating 3 years of movie reviews with some new content and some new reviews as well, for all the most anticipated titles of 2022.

So, with that out of the way, my review for today is going to be about a movie adaptation of the popular Frank Herbert's Dune, by a really appreciated and very good director, Dennis Villeneuve, who did some excellent movies like Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 .

Before I start the review, a review that was postponed because I did not have the time, when I first saw the movie, to do it, a little synopsis for you guys:

  • A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

From the beginning, I confess, I did not watch the David Lynch take on the source material but I have seen some footage and some videos on that particular movie and, I have to say, this version is way better than the Lynch one. It feels more true to the books, which I read, some of them and it does not shy away to bring you the whole story of, mainly, the first book. Some of you may get bored and may become impatient because if it's very slow pace and it's way of advancing the story.

One thing that I can say is that the movie, from a visual stand point, looks stunning and very ambitious and very large in scale. It may struggle at some point with it's efforts to stay true to the source material but that low point gets overshadowed by it's visual splendor.

On the action part, the movie still gets some points, however little and far apart from each other are, the action sequences still manage to impress and entertain you. The actors do a really fine job on portraying these characters, although Zendaya, I think, could have used a bit more of screen time that she got.

Alongside the visuals, the movie's sound design is also on point, with the music and it's soundtrack as a whole is amazing and it really combines well with the style of the director.

Overall, if you are a SF fan and, most importantly, someone that really likes Star Wars and the Lord of the Rings franchises this is the movie for you because Dune is a really good combination between the both, having a similar hero's journey. Maybe a bit to similar but, although it follows some similar steps, Villeneuve puts his own mark on the genre, a mark that really counts. The story, although slow it really starts to build up and get's you hooked until the end, making you very hyped for part II. 8.2/10

OK guys, that was my review for this one. The next one that I have programmed is the second Halloween movie but I am not really sure that I will be able to do that before Spidey comes crawling but we shall see. Still, expect the Spider Man: No Way Home review this Sunday.

Until then, take care, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing!
