Hello guys and welcome back for another round of movie reviews with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies!!
So, because Spider Man: No Way Home is just behind the corner and seeing that I did not have the time to review this movie when it came out, although I have seen it at the time, I thought tonight is the perfect time to review it plus I have the time to do it so why the hell not. But, before, I dive into the review, a bit of a synopsis for you guys:
Marvel Studios' Eternals features an exciting new team of Super Heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ancient aliens who have been living on Earth in secret for thousands of years. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, an unexpected tragedy forces them out of the shadows to reunite against mankind's most ancient enemy, the Deviants.
As you guys know, there was a bit of a discussion surrounding this movie, after it came out and it got a couple of some really harsh reviews from some critics that said this was the worst movie in the entire MCU, a statement with which I really don't agree and I will explain why.
From the beginning, I realised that this movie is going to be different than anything the MCU has shown before but I did not expected to be that different. I mean, it still contains everything that the other Marvel movies have, like the humor, the action sequences, which in this one are not that much and a little far between but still enjoyable to watch on the big screen and the heart, the emotions are still there but, with all of those components, the movie still feels like it belongs in another universe but maybe that was the intent of it's director, Chloe Zhao, to tell a story that is beyond the known universe in order to open new doors to some other possible worlds and universes.
Visually, the movie looks stunning, Chloe Zhao definitely bringing her unique visual style that she had already shown in Nomadland to the MCU. It has some of the most beautiful shots, camera angles and wide panoramic views that we have ever seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
This movie brings some new ideas to the table, a new mythology and that is the main problem, not a big one, more of a concern than a problem because this new mythology, although touched upon in some of the previous movies, still has some big unknowns, although the movie clearing some of them there are still some mysteries that still need some answers. Sometimes, these new ideas may be intriguing but often, they may be more confusing than intriguing.
There are some weird references to some DC characters, like Superman and Batman, which felt so out of place that I really did not know that to think about them at the time. A crossover between DC and Marvel, on the big screen, is not going to happen, for sure so I believe that this will be the closest that we will get to that kind of combo. The special effects, for the most part, are good, the CGI does not reveal itself that much often but there are some moments where you can see that the special effect guys took a little lunch break :)). The performances from the cast were on point but the stand out was, of course, Angelina Jolie.
Overall, to sum up this movie, it was a very ambitious film to make and put together and you can see that, it has a very interesting visual concept and it took them some guts to present these new directions for the MCU but they could have put them in a less confusing package, maybe do what James Gunn did with the first Guardians movie. The movie was good but not as good as I expected it to be. Still, Thor: The Dark World is the worst MCU movie. 7/10
OK guys, that was my review for this one. Next up, we take a trip to the desert in Dune.Until then, take care, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing!
