Hello guys and welcome back for another round of movie reviews with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies!

So, unfortunately I was not able to post this review on Sunday like I said because I was out of town for the weekend so I had to make the review on the fly tonight and I hope you guys will like it. Also, you made be curious why I chose this title for the review and I will tell you but when I will start the review :)).

Before I do, I am pretty sure some of you already have seen the movie and know the plot and story of it but, as we do on this site, I will still post a little synopsis for this movie, just to be on safe side :))

  • A bank teller called Guy realizes he is a background character in an open world video game called Free City that will soon go offline.

Like I said before, you are probably wondering why I chose to name this review with that title and the reason behind it is because this movie has the elements of those 3 concepts blended and mixed up together. The beginning of the movie reminded me immediately of the beginning for The Lego Movie . I was half expecting that Ryan Reynolds to brake out and start singing Everything is Awesome :)). Also, the whole main plot of the movie gave me serious The Truman Show vibes and the whole concept of it is basically a Fortnite game live action adaptation. I can throw also some Matrix elements in there as well, with the whole world in a world situation.

With all of that being said, I very much enjoyed this movie for what it is, for it's colorful visuals and gaming aspect of it, for the story that it's telling with like being the good guy sometimes you can make a difference and choose to be good rather choosing to be bad and violent. It has a very interesting concept to it, it has something for everybody, it's got comedy, it's got action, it's god romance so it basically appeals to anyone, gamer or non gamer or if you are just starting in this gaming universe, a noob as the gamers say, you will still enjoy this movie.

The main story it is also an underdog story, which I very much appreciate. It speaks to the normal guys, the day to day individual, who does the same things over and over again until he/she decides that they can, not only be just good, they can really be great and try to reach for a higher purpose in life. So, in that department, the movie and the characters, not only the main ones, are very relatable with real life.

Yes, the world in a world plot has already been told a couple of times, with The Matrix and more recent titles like Ready Player One and this year's Space Jam: A New Legacy but I was not that bothered by it, to be honest. The thing that bothered me slightly was the in game logic or the lack of it that exists in this movie. I mean the gaming logic that plays out in this movie is not as accurate as it is in real life but I am not going to go into this because this will turn into a rant rather than a review :)).

Overall, the movie is very funny, combining a great concept with some good self aware humor and a very lovable and charming cast, with Ryan Reynolds giving his PG-13 Deadpool impression but also pulling the serious stuff as well very good. And he and Jodie Comer have a good chemistry plus Taika Waititi does not give a single fuck in this movie, he is just all in and having fun. Plus, being Disney, there are some Marvel ( mainly Avengers and Deadpool stuff) and Star Wars easter eggs, very on the nose but I did not mind it, I actually liked it. It's a perfect movie for gamers but, like I said before, if you are not a gamer you can also enjoy this movie just as much. 7.5/10

OK guys, that was my review for this one. Next one will be a missed one, if I can find the time to do it and I hope I will. Until then, take care, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing!
