Hello guys and welcome back for another round of movie reviews with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies!
So, the lack of content since my last review happened because I moved into a new location with my job and it has been some really rough couple of weeks but it's all finished now and I am ready to get back to talking about movies and giving you guys my honest opinions about the new releases in the movie world, streaming and on the big screen. Sadly, we begin the month with a new entry in the Sony Spider Verse or Multiverse that is slightly connected with the MCU or whatever the people at Sony want to call this but this movie really made that statement even more confusing than before. First of all, a bit of synopsis for you guys:
Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. While at first it seems to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed. Will good override evil – or will Morbius succumb to his mysterious new urges?
So, this was a movie that happened, considering the fact that it was pushed back so many times that I thought Sony dropped the release of this movie but, sadly, they really pushed it down our throats, to see if the public will bite and appreciate this new Marvel character. So, it was really worth the hype, that really was not even there to begin with? No, it definitely was not worth the hype.
The style of the movie is the same as in the Venom movies, uninspired, dreary and dry, with lame special effects and some bad CGI, which the movie really has an exaggerated amount of, by the way. Almost no action sequences and, where there is an action set piece, is very limited and very poorly edited that you can't really understand much of it, expect for the times where the bullet time and slow motion effects are used, which do look really cool and that is when you can really see what is happening.
The humor is almost inexistent, apart for some really lame little jokes that don't work, not even for a chuckle. Maybe that one about Venom, that is also in the trailer. While I brought Venom into discussion and the humor, the relation between Venom and Eddie was what really worked in those movies and made the Venom movies more entertaining than this pile of guano.
The story makes no sense, it's illogical, it has some scenes that come from nowhere and clearly they left something on the cutting room floor because the connectivity is, sometimes, at a miss between some scenes. It's not a very linear story or maybe it is to linear but what I can tell you, it will confuse you more than enlighten you, especially in the post credit scenes.
Overall, a very emotionless movie, with some very dry performances but Jared Leto is alright in this but, although saying that, I don't think these types of roles are suited for him. I think he should stay in the more serious area of movies and with the roles that he is taking on. Almost without action sequences and when the movie has some action, is not entertaining and exciting, it's just a mess of CGI combined with some bad special effects that result into nothing special. Humorless, a very dry movie experience all together and I think Sony did not really care about this movie because, if they did, it would not have resulted in such a train wreck.
ATTENTION! BIG SPOILERS AHEAD!
The most annoying aspect of this movie, in my opinion, where the post credit scenes, which both feature Michael Keaton's Vulture/Adrian Toomes, that was transported from the MCU into the Sony universe via the purple cracks from the end of Spider Man: No Way Home which made no lick of sense because, the ones that were transported into the MCU where from a different universe but Vulture was already in the MCU but, with this movie, the rules have been rewritten somehow and now everybody can go back and fourth between universes, apparently. Heard that? That was logic leaving the room and slamming the door behind it :)).
The second one had Morbius drive into the middle of nowhere, where he meets with Vulture, who apparently has a new suit but not the one from Spider Man: Homecoming which, OK, maybe he created himself a new one but, the suit that he had before was made from Chitauri technology that was left after the battle of New York, in The Avengers. With this scene, I think Sony wants to do a Sinister Six movie team up and have Andrew Garfield as the Spider Man for this universe but, all of the Spider Man easter eggs from the trailer were completely erased from the movie, making the post credit scenes even more confusing. Anyway, already this movie is making a shit load of money and I really can't understand how is that possible. Apparently, some people just love trash movies. I also love some trashy movies but, at least those movies are entertaining and have something to offer me. This one, does not do anything for me. 5/10
OK guys, that was my review for this one. For my next one, we return into the magical world of the Wizarding World, Hogwarts and the Harry Potter universe with the third entry into the Fantastic Beasts series, Secrets of Dumbledore.
Until then, take care, stay safe and keep on reviewing!
