Hello guys and welcome back for another round of movie reviews with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies!
So, this is my second review of the 5 reviews that I said I would do before the new Spider Man movie comes out, although I saw this movie a couple of days ago, I did the review for it but did not find the time to post it but, seeing that I am going to be busy the whole week, including this weekend, I've decided to try and do these reviews this week, whenever I find the time to do them. Tonight, the new RE movie is next but, before I do that, a bit of a synopsis for you guys:
Returning to the origins of the massively popular RESIDENT EVIL franchise, fan and filmmaker Johannes Roberts brings the games to life for a whole new generation of fans. In RESIDENT EVIL: WELCOME TO RACCOON CITY, once the booming home of pharmaceutical giant Umbrella Corporation, Raccoon City is now a dying Midwestern town. The company’s exodus left the city a wasteland…with great evil brewing below the surface. When that evil is unleashed, a group of survivors must work together to uncover the truth behind Umbrella and make it through the night.
So, I am not really a fan of the video game franchise because I did not really play any of the games, although being a gamer I did not have the opportunity to play them but I really enjoyed the other Resident Evil movies that came before, despite the opinions that movie critics have about them. This version, however, I had some issues with it as well
It wants to be a prequel, I think because a sequel to the other franchise this movie is not. It does bring all of the characters from the games but I felt that was more of a fan service for those who enjoy playing the games. Despite the fact that I haven't play the games, I am familiar with some of them because I watched some playthroughs from Youtube gamers and this movie really reminded me, especially, of the second or the forth game, I am not sure which. What this movie does good is that it captures the feel of the games and the style of the games, more than the other movies did. It really felt that I was playing the game, changing characters throughout the movie, like you would do in the game.
It has some good action sequences, although the action scenes are a bit short and a bit to far apart from each other to really have an impact. It has some good humor, more than I really expected to be and it does have that horror element more present than in the other movies. The exclusion of the Alice character is, in my opinion a plus for me because the movie can focus more on the story and other characters, rather than a single one to be the main interest.
Overall, the movie, this attempt at a reboot, was a bit of disappointment for me because, although is a very faithful adaptation of the games, it still follows the same steps of the other movies, with the same story line, lesser action sequences than the others and it was not that entertaining for me. I appreciated the horror feel that it gave, the characters plus the monster design was very good and the effects were satisfying enough to earn a pass. For the fans of the games, this will be enjoyable for sure but I feel that this source material was never meant to be translated to the big screen. 6.2/10
OK guys, that was my review for this one. Next up, hopping very soon I can post it, the review for Eternals. Until then, take care, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing!
