Hello guys and welcome back for another round of movie reviews with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies!
So, I know that at the beginning of the year I did the Harry Potter 20th reunion review but that was a on the fly review, it was a very special review that I really wanted to do so it wasn't the first official review of the year, this one is. The 5th movie in the Scream franchise is the first official review of 2022 so buckle up for some twists and turns. Actually, not really but, before I start the review, I will give you guys a bit of synopsis, just to have a stab on it, pun definitely very intended:
Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past.
First of all, I very much enjoy this franchise. The other 4 movies that came before it and, especially the original one, which this one is almost an exact copy of it or it pays an omage to the original or it's a requel, like they say in the movie. Regardless of that, the previous movies I very much enjoyed and still enjoy watching and I really did enjoy watching this as well.
Second of all, very uninspired with the title. I really think it would not have been that much of an effort to put a 5 after the title because everybody knows is the 5th movie of the franchise but, clearly, the ones that made it don't. Or maybe they did that on purpose, just to make this feel very much like the original, which it basically is.
Thirdly, the movie is basically The Matrix Resurrections because it follows the exact same plot as that movie but, with this one, it mainly works to it's benefit. Also, it follows the exact same steps as the original movie, with the beginning and the ending, practically, being almost 100% the same. The movie lacks originality, it's very predictable, it's twists and killer reveals you can see, at least one of them, coming from a mile away. The second one is a tiny bit difficult but, still, I managed to figure it out before the reveal. So there is no surprise in this movie, besides the fact that Skeet Ulrich is also in it, alongside the other 3, which we see them in the trailer.
The movie really knows what it really is and it's making fun of that, acknowledging the fact that it's a rerun of what happened in the past, with new characters but, also, bringing back the original ones. It's meta and self aware and that is why I compared it to the 4th Matrix movie but, like I said, with this one works better. It's got some really tense moments, where the suspense is building up a bit which I enjoyed and it has a lot of awesome and very gory and bloody killings and that is what I want to see in a slasher movie.
Overall, for a 5th entry in this franchise, it's still going good. It's an OK movie because, after the original, there is not that much originality to keep in a movie like this. Or in any other slasher movie actually. This trend, because it has become a trend, to bring back older franchise back to life, with a new cast but still keeping the original one, has become so popular in Hollywood. The same thing happened with Star Wars, Halloween, Terminator, The Matrix and now, Scream joined the club. They also reference those movies, plus other much better horror movies in this one which I founded to be very enjoyable because I saw all of those movies :)). It was enjoyable, I liked the tense moments that it had, it's not scary, although these movies never were scary, very good killings, with plenty of blood and gore, some very violent ones actually plus the old cast is back, which was a nice treat. Still going meta, much harder in this one but, hey, if it still works, why break it right? 7/10
OK guys, that was my review for this one. Look for my next review soon but I am not really sure to what. I would have said Morbius but that got pushed back to April so not sure what review will be next but, surely, one will be. Maybe tick, tick...BOOM! which I really enjoyed and staring Andrew Garfield.
Until then, take care, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing!
