Hello guys and welcome back for another round of movie reviews with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies!
So, I said I will not review another Netflix movie after that Texas Chainsaw one but here I am, reviewing another Netflix movie, this time coming from the guys who brought you Free Guy and, also, the same guys that will make Deadpool 3, Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy. Let me tell you, this is not even in the same ball park as those movies, this feels way smaller in quantity and quality but, still, it wasn't a bad movie and I really enjoyed most of it.
My thoughts about the movie coming up next, after this brief synopsis:
A time-traveling pilot teams up with his younger self and his late father to come to terms with his past while saving the future.
Wow, that was actually the briefest synopsis ever posted but I think it sums up the main story and plot of this movie, which reminded of all of those classic Spielberg sci-fi movies plus a little Back to the Future as well, with even a little reference to that in the movie or, actually, half a reference but still, it gets mentioned.
I really liked this movie and, mainly, the main story or, more accurately, the core of the story, which, by the way, a story with a main plot that is very generic and by the book and so unoriginal and done before in other movies but, the core of that whole mess is really moving and full of heart. It is a well balanced mix between sci-fi, action and family drama, sprinkled with some good humor for good measure, a humor that might get a bit annoying for some people at certain times, especially with the interactions between the two lead characters but, for me, it was funny.
The action is fairly good although is not as much action as I thought initially plus the action sequences are a bit far apart from one another, making the movie a bit dull and dry at some points but, when the action sequences begin, it picks up the pace a little bit.
One gripe that I have with this movie is about the special effects, which look very cheap and not that great, mostly in the final act of the movie. The very obvious green screen is very obvious plus a de-aged Catherine Keener looks just awful but, in some scenes, the special effects are a bit better.
Performances from the actors are OK, no standing out performance, Ryan Reynolds is doing kind of the same thing he is doing and had done from some time now, basically playing another version of Deadpool, which I also think he is also playing in his real life since the first Deadpool movie, Zoe Saldana is always great although I would have liked it that she had a bit more screen time. Mark Rufallo and Jennifer Garner are also good and the kid is doing very well on being very annoying. Just kidding, the kid is fine as well and I really dug the chemistry between him and Reynolds.
Overall, a fun and entertaining adventure for the family, with a moving core message that really hits home and, honestly, makes more of an impact than the whole movie does. 7/10
OK guys, that was my review for this one. Not sure what I am going to do next but I just watched Turning Red on Disney+ so maybe I will do a review for that one, if I will find the time to do it.
Until then guys, take care, stay safe, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing!
