Hello guys and welcome back for another round of movie reviews with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies!
Because I am working at a review for the second Wonder Woman movie from last year, yesterday I saw the new Suicide Squad movie so I have decided to do a review for this movie, since is a new release and I have waited to see this movie for some time.
Before I dive into the review, here is a little synopsis for you guys:
In the film, a task force of convicts are sent to destroy evidence of the giant alien Starro.
So, as you can see, the plot for this movie is pretty straight forward and simple but, at second viewing, you can see some depth into the backstory of every single character, which the 2016 movie did not have. If you are wondering, whether this is a sequel for the 2016 movie, the answer, the sincere answer, is that I don't really know myself. Some say it's a sequel because it does have some characters that are returning from the previous movie but I say, from my point of view, is that this one is a soft reboot not a direct sequel.
I loved this movie from beginning to end because James Gunn has managed to deliver a movie that is both extremely funny and gory, very violent, excessive even but with some character depth and emotional backstories for every single character. It has a very fast pace sometimes intertwined with some little emotional scenes that slow things down a bit but it does not damage the movie or the pacing because the scenes work so good together.
Think of this movie like a version of Guardians of the Galaxy more grounded with the same funny gags and more violent. It does not even feel like a super hero movie, it feels more like a action comedy combined with comic book movie elements. This movie even manages to make one of the lamest villains from DC into a cool and, sometimes, deadly superhero. I am not going to say who, you just going to have to watch the movie to find out and I cannot recommend it enough, you have got to see this movie.
It offers what the 2016 movie should have offered, a story that it's not that impressive but at least it makes sense and it's coherent, a very stylized look, plenty of action sequences that work and are filmed the right way because there are some good camera shots and some very impressive camera work in this one, characters that have some backstory that really makes you connect with them and it's very fun to watch.
Overall, a huge improvement from the 2016 version and a Suicide Squad movie that really feels like that and stays true to the style of it's director and the comics as well. 8.5/10
OK guys, that is my review for this one. Like I said, I am currently working on some reviews for movies that came out months ago and I am hoping that I can post one or two until Free Guy comes out. Until then, take care, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing!
