Hello guys and welcome back for another round of movie reviews with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies!
So, before I dive into this review for this amazing movie, I just want to point out that the movie has already been online for a couple of weeks but I wanted to see it on the big screen because of the way it was shot, put together and constructed. Did I get my money's worth when I could have seen it at home? Yes, I did got my money's worth and it was totally worth it.
More about my opinions about this movie after a quick summary: two soldiers embark on a dangerous mission to save 1,600 men from certain doom during World War I.
So, from the start a I want to say that I really enjoyed this movie, especially the way in was shot and put together because this style of film making and montage is a piece of technological achievement. You feel that the whole movie was shot in one take, with absolutely no cuts and little to no interruptions. It feels very immersive, transporting you into the middle of World War I and the struggles that those two soldiers went thru to complete the mission.
It shows you the horror of war and what it does to people. Also, this movie symbolizes the disgust and displeasure exists against this war and war in particular. The movie is gritty, it has some very emotional moments and some disturbing images, it contains some violence but it's not exaggerated and some of the best visual imagery I have seen of last year in cinema.
Acting wise, the two leading young actors, George Mackay and Dean-Charles Chapman, give some very real, emotional and gritty performances, without being out shined by some excellent veteran actors like Mark Strong, Colin Firth and Benedict Cumberbatch, which I find it a little bit weird to put some very good actors like these guys and not give them very much screen time and I know, the story is about the two soldiers but it still feels weird.
What more to say about this movie? It is impressive, tough, thought provoking, it looks beautiful, it also has a little bit of humor, just enough to get you out of the war of it all. It is the Saving Private Ryan of a new generation.
Overall? It is a movie that you definitely need to see on a big screen, to fully embrace the emotions, the feelings and the power, because this movie is powerful, that this movie transfers to you. 8.6/10
OK guys, that is my review for this one. Next, I think, I will go on an adventure with mister RDJ as Dolittle. Until then, take care, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing!
