Hello guys and welcome back for another round of movie reviews, quarantine edition, with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies, even in a pandemic:))) So, because we are forced to stay home because of this outbreak, this is day I don't really know anymore for me, because I kinda lost count and the movies are canceled and movie theaters are all closing, I will still provide content by watching movies at home and give you my take on them.
Because we cannot physically go on a vacation, for now at least but maybe soon enough, we can imagine ourselves going on a remote luxurious island and have some fun, drink, party and other things and what better way to do that if not with this movie. Ups, sorry, I said better way? I meant the worst way, not just because the movie sucks but because of what is happening on the island.
Before I dive into the review, a bit of a synopsis for you guys: the plot follows five people who visit the eponymous island, discovering that their dream fantasies brought to life begin to turn into horrific living nightmares they must try to survive.
Granted, there is something fairly good with this idea but the execution is not good at all. Seeing that this movie is a prequel to the 70's TV series, which I just found out, of course it was modernized for the audiences from today but it still feels like a bad horror movie from the 70's and that is not a good thing. Plus it's freaking Blumhouse, the company that produced Get Out, Halloween (2018) and countless others that were way better than this one.
The movie has all the cliches that you would expect from a story with a group of random people, that ultimately have something in common, that arrive on a remote location, owned by the bad guy who becomes a good guy in the end. Plus, it has some revenge plot that is very obvious so it comes of no surprise with the ending reveal. The movie is not even scary, it does feature 1 or 2 fairly good scary scenes but it's mostly all jump scares and horror movie cliches.
Overall, it offers nothing new in this department, just some washed out ideas, which at first seem good but with poor execution comes crappy results. The movie tried to entice viewers with the darkness of temptation and the effects of ''be careful what you wish for'' but it ended up being just a paint by numbers average horror flick. 5/10
OK guys, that is my review for this one. Another one coming up for Vivarium, which is 10 times better that the one I just reviewed. Until then, take care, stay safe, stay clean, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing!
