Hello guys and welcome back for another round of movie reviews, quarantine edition, with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies, even in a pandemic:)))
So chaps, like I said, this is my second review for today, I have a bit more spare time on my hands so I am a bit on a roll here and a bit of the inspiration has come back and I say that because I was having a bit of a writer's block in these last few weeks, apart for the busy schedule but I am glad to say that the inspiration is back and, hopefully, is here to stay.
Before I dive into the review, more appropriate here, I will give you a bit of a synopsis for you guys: the plot follows a US Navy Commander on his first war-time assignment in command of a multi-national escort group defending a merchant ship convoy under attack by submarines in early-1942 during the Battle of the Atlantic, only months after the U.S. officially entered World War II.
So, as you can see, both my reviews for today are war movies and both are based on a book which was based on some actual events. This movie is based on the book called The Good Shepherd that came out in 1955, which came out 13 years after the titular battle that is presented in this movie.
Although the characters in this particular film as not as bold or robust as the action sequences that are presented to us, it still has a very fast pace, surprising for WWII movie, plenty of action sequences that are incredible and well crafted, shot and visually stunning. Some of it's visuals are truly unbelievable.
Apart from being a war movie it is also a very well crafted thriller because, in this, the titular Greyhound ship is playing a very dangerous, very thrilling and exciting cat and mouse game with a German submarine, well multiple German submarines but one in particular called The Wolf. Also, in every scene when the U-boats appear, the music changes, it has a very distinctive tone that signals the arrival of the submarines. I quite enjoyed how the submarines were made to look like a predator stalking it's pray, calculating and searching for the perfect moment to attack. Plus, it's economical point of view is very interesting and very well in tone with what's happening today in the world.
Overall, a very well made movie, with some excellent thrill packed moments, incredible action sequences and an interesting real life approach. Awesome performances as well, from Tom Hanks and crew. 8/10
OK guys, that is my review for this one as well. My upcoming review will be on the horror movie Relic which, from what I am hearing, suppose to be very good and the best horror movie of the year so far actually so I am very looking forward to that. After this, I am not sure when I will post another review, with my schedule getting busier with each day but we shall see what happens. Until then, take care, stay safe, stay clean, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing!
