Hello guys and welcome back for another round of movie reviews, quarantine edition, with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies, even in a pandemic:)))
So, I know that I haven't posted a new review in the last month or so but I just couldn't find the time to do it, with my schedule being so chaotic plus DC Fandome just wrapped up and I enjoyed watching that very much. We got some great news about some great DC properties that are coming out next year like the new Batman movie, The Snyder Cut for Justice League movie, the new Suicide Squad movie from James Gunn, two new games, Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad Kills the Justice League that looked very interesting plus the new season of The Flash. All the trailers from DC Fandome are on my Facebook page if you wanna take a look.
With that out of the way let's get back to the review for this superhero movie that is not based on a comic. First, a little synopsis: the movie follows a drug dealer, a police officer, and a former soldier who team up to stop the distribution of a pill that gives the user superpowers for five minutes.
So, let's talk a bit about that premise that is a bit similar with the one from the Dredd movie, the 2012 version, when Judge Dredd tried to stop the distribution of the drug Slow-Mo but that's were the similarities stop between these two movies. It's an interesting premise but the movie does not take full advantage of this premise, relying most on the action sequences and special effects, which I will get to in a minute. Also, speaking of the premise, there is also some social commentary in it about the danger of drug addiction and drug consumption and how this real life problem affects all countries, not only the States. How it corrupts young people, good people become bad and also the police force can be corrupted but in this movie is for a good reason.
About the action and special effects in this movie, it is definitely a plus because the action sequences are well shot, with some fairly good editing and a lot of special effects that really can rival the MCU and the DCEU because they look very good. It looks very cool and slick plus it ads some charisma to the movie.
It's some good humour, especially from the interactions between the three central characters, Jamie Foxx's, Gordon-Levitt's and Dominique Fishback's, who gives one hell of a breakthrough performance. Plus, Jamie Foxx and Gordon-Levitt are the icing on the cake because these two are great as well.
Overall, I really enjoyed this movie, it has some great sequences, it is a fun action thriller to relax to and throw some popcorn in your face, from the comfort of your own couch. Although the movie lacks some potential with it's premise it's got the action and the special effects that get the job done. 7/10
OK guys, that is my review for this one. Hopefully I can get more reviews in the weeks to come because we have some new movies coming out, fingers crossed. We got The New Mutants, hopefully this time they are going to release it, Tenet is finally coming out of it's shell, Bill and Ted Face The Music plus Mulan on September 4th on Disney+. So we got something to look forward to. Until then, take care, stay safe, stay clean, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing!
