Hello guys and welcome back for another round of movie reviews, quarantine edition, with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies, even in a pandemic:)))

Before I start the review for this one, I would like to say that I used to watch the old Scooby-Doo cartoons from the 60's on Cartoon Network, when I was little and, with all seriousness, I would watch them again today because they were fun and funny. So, when I heard that a new Scooby-Doo animated movie is going to happen and it's going to be a reboot of the old series, I was a bit chuffed, honestly. And then I saw the end result, which is not bad but it's not even remotely good.

Before I say more, a bit of a synopsis for you guys: The film's plot follows the Mystery Gang as they are enlisted by Blue Falcon to prevent Dick Dastardly from opening the Underworld and unleashing Cerberus.

So, bringing a character like Dick Dastardly into a Scooby-Doo adventure seemed a bit an odd of a choice because it's a character from a completely different cartoon but then I heard that they were planning to do a shared cinematic universe, which has become a regular theme now in Hollywood. It's not a bad idea but the execution could have been handled a bit more and not so poorly.

I very much enjoyed the beginning, the introduction of the Mystery Gang as kids and how they meat plus their first mystery case, sort of. Now that felt like an original episode of the original cartoon but what followed became a rather generic and dull animated movie, with some action thrown in there that felt a bit out of place for a Scooby-Doo cartoon. We also have superheroes because why not.

The voice casting is good but I would have enjoyed more if Shaggy would have been voiced by Matthew Lillard, who played Shaggy in the live action Scooby-Doo movies from the early 2000's. It's funny, there are some moments that make you chuckle a bit, it's got the humor, mostly aimed for the younger viewers and for the fans of the property and characters. It's got some heart, a bit emotional at one point and kinda addresses the term of friendship and sacrifice, which was a nice touch. The animation, unfortunately, for me was not a prize winner. Most of the time, it looked very unnatural, fake and uneven.

I understand that they wanted to give a modern spin for the new generation on this characters and I really appreciate that but, at least, do it in the style that is both an homage and a recreation of the original.

Overall, it was a bit of a let down for me because I expected more from a recreation of this famous property and characters. It lacked the cheesiness of the original but hey, you cannot win them all! I almost forgot, I really liked the modernized but still the original opening credits from the classic cartoon. That won them a point from me. The rest, nope! 5.8/10

OK guys, that is my review for this one. Stay tuned, next up will be another Netflix movie, Da 5 Bloods and the Disney+ fiasco and disaster that is Artemis Fowl. Until then, take care, stay safe, stay clean, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing!
