Hello guys and welcome back for another round of movie reviews, quarantine edition, with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies, even in a pandemic:))) So, because we are forced to stay home because of this outbreak, this is day I don't really know anymore for me, because I kinda lost count and the movies are canceled and movie theaters are all closing, I will still provide content by watching movies at home and give you my take on them.
This week I will try to tackle the extra weird, meta and strange movie called, simply, The Lighthouse, with Willem Dafoe and the next Batman, Robert Pattinson. Before I get into it, a bit of a synopsis for you guys: two lighthouse keepers who start to lose their sanity when a storm strands them on the remote island where they are stationed.
Let me begin by saying that this movie was directed by Robert Eggers, the same guy that did The Witch, a little way back, like in 2015, which was also a great but strange and weird movie and it seems like that's his trait in film making because this one has all of that weirdness as well, if not a bit more.
The movie is beautifully and masterfully filmed, in black and white, which gives the movie an old school feel, like it was shot in the 30's but it also amplifies the strange and eerie atmosphere that really makes this piece one of the more interesting piece of cinema that came out last year. Blend that all with a gripping story and two excellent performances from the two actors on screen and you got one hell of a mysterious, weird, strange but interesting movie.
All of the shots are perfectly framed, giving you the sense of claustrophobia and isolation, which is kinda on point with what is happening in the world right now, where people are isolated into their homes.
The movie is a tough one to watch because of the strange imagery that is showed on screen, the very slow pace, which takes a bit of patience to get thru and the whole vibe that the movie conveys so, what I'am saying is that this movie may not be for everyone but, if you are a true cinema buff you would come to really appreciate it for what it is.
Overall, I really enjoyed it, it is a great movie, a really well told and filmed story that, once again shows that Robert Eggers is one of the greatest film makers of our days. 8.5/10
OK guys, that is my review for this one. Next up, maybe Thor's new movie from Netflix, Extraction and some others that I am going to see. Until then, take care, stay safe, stay clean, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing! 'Till next time guys!
