Hello again guys and welcome back for another round of movie review with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies and that's OK!
Before I get in the review, a bit of a synopsis for you: former toy maker Sam Mullins and his wife, Esther, are happy to welcome a nun and six orphaned girls into their California farmhouse. Years earlier, the couple's 7-year-old daughter Annabelle died in a tragic car accident. Terror soon strikes when one child sneaks into a forbidden room and finds a seemingly innocent doll that appears to have a life of its own.
Man, this movie was terrifying! Way way better than the first one.
Director David F. Sandberg, who also did Lights Out, the short and the long feature which are scary as hell, crafts an interesting and creepy story of how that doll became what it is today.
It's way scary than the first one, with jump scares that don't feel cheap but well executed and with tremendous effect. It looks better than the first one, better acted and with better effects than the original. The atmosphere is perfectly combined with the haunting score that this movie has. Unfortunately, the plot is kinda convoluted and nonsensical and the movie falls down the cliched path of other horror movies, very often that it makes the movie very predictable.
What saves this movie is the brilliance of David Sandberg and the way that he uses the scares and the environment ti give you a truly horrifying experience.
This reminded of a similar situation with the Ouija movies. The first Ouija, which also came out in 2014, was total crap. However, Ouija: Origin of Evil, which came out in 2016 and it is also a prequel, was a nice surprise and a success. The same case with this two movies. Annabelle is awful and this one is much better. There are a few scenes than are not for the faint of heart. The entire movie is a scare fest from start to finish if you can overlook the obvious cliches.
Overall, a well deserved spot in the Conjuring universe! 7.2/10
OK guys, that is my review for the second one as well. Next, Annabelle Comes Home and I hope I am prepared when she does arrive. Until then, take care, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing!
