Hello guys and welcome back for another round of movie reviews with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies!
So guys, some days have passed since my last review, which was also not for a new movie but for a missed one but this week was a bit full, splitting between my job, this passion turned second job and, also, editing, writing plus this week was the PlayStation showcase and, being also a gamer, I was very excited about this showcase and I had reasons to be because Insomniac Games just announced that, alongside the second game with Spider Man they have another one with freaking Wolverine, which I did not expect to see. Also, the first trailer for The Matrix: Ressurections dropped this week and it was awesome. This Christmas is going to be Spider Man v Neo and I am very curious which one is going to come out on top.
With that out of the way, today is another missed one review, the only Marvel movie that I still need to review and we all know the story behind this movie, that was postponed over and over again until it came out on July this year, in cinemas and also on Disney+. After that, it was that whole scandal with Disney and Scarlett about the earnings that she did not receive from the Disney+ release but, I am here to review the movie, not get into politics so, before I start, I will give you guys a little synopsis for it, although you have already seen it:
In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff a.k.a. Black Widow confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.
So, this movie needed to be made, in my opinion, a few years ago but, at long last, this character got her own solo movie which, although is a sequel to Civil War and a prequel to Infinity War and Endgame but it still counts as a solo adventure. An adventure that jumps between social commentary, buried deep in the action so it's very subtle but it's there, spy thriller and family drama. All these three bring something different to the movie, making it a mix of all of those, a mix that works, most of the time.
The action sequences look very good, the humor is on point, which is not a surprise for a Marvel movie, especially in the scenes that involve the whole family dynamic plus those scenes bring a well scripted character development for the new characters and, also, for the older ones as well. The spy thriller part is there but not in it's entirety and not as good represented like it was in Winter Soldier but it certainly feels like it. Visually, they went with the Winter Soldier and Civil War inspired look.
I did not quite like what they did with the villain and I am talking here about Taskmaster, a villain that I was very excited for. I enjoyed the representation of the villain throughout the movie but the reveal left a bit of a sour taste for me.
Overall, for me, it was an entertaining adventure, with spy movie elements, good family dynamic with some nice humor, a good portion of action sequences, some deep themes and a great cast. The Marvel formula still works and, also, it sets up, with one of it's post credit scenes, the Hawkeye series. 7.2/10
OK guys, that was my review for this one. The next reviews are going to be also some missed ones, the last of them I promise but, maybe, some new ones as well. Still need to see Malignant which I will review and possibly this will be the next one but, also, expect A Quiet Place Part 2 as well.
Until then guys, take care, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing!
