Hello guys and welcome back to another round of movie review with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies and that's OK!
So, before I really dive in into this review, I have to say that this movie follows the exact path that all the sequels followed, that being to upstage the previous movie. More on that later.
First of all, a little synopsis for you lot: The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
So, my above affirmation was referring at the well known fact that sequels are always trying to upstage the original movie, in terms of action, special effects, characters, humor and story.
This movie is doing that but with one small difference: it's bigger in scale from the first one but it's smaller, a lot smaller in the story department. Everybody is saying that they've put more effort into the design, look and special effects than the actual story, the thing that really matters in a movie. If the story isn't strong than the movie does not work. And I agree, to a certain point.
Yes, the story is weak, flimsy at best, with character decisions that don't make any sense, action scenes that defy logic and gravity even plus some very sudden time and location jumps that can confuse you a bit. Also, the length of the movie is 2 hour and 11 minutes but, the third act felt to be a lot longer. I mean, I felt like I was in the theater for more than 3 hours, if you don't count the commercials and trailers. I wasn't tired of the fight scenes but I felt like the third act was dragging and dragging, struggling to reach the end.
Speaking of fight scenes, this is where the movie gets crazy good. The special effects are amazing, fight scenes are gigantic, engaging, earth - shattering and downright awesome. Sound effects are also a plus, making you feel every thump that Godzilla and the other Kaiju make. You can literally feel the ground moving. Or, at least, your seat. The movie looks amazing, with some camera shots that are out of this world.
The cast was good as well, although some of the actors, I felt, they were a bit underused and Millie Bobbie Brown, as much as I like her in Stranger Things, she kinda plays the same character but without the powers of course.
Overall, what I wanted was to see some Kaiju fighting in crazy battles and I got just that. I was satisfied even if the story was so weak. They can't tell a story but they can surely do one hell of a KaijuBowl. I cannot wait for the Godzilla vs. Kong from next year! 7/10
OK guys, that is my review for this one. Next up, because X-Men Dark Pheonix is coming out this weekend, some mutants will invade this site. Until then, take care, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing!
