Hello and welcome back to another round of movie reviews with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies and that's OK with it!
So, I am a big fan of the other two installments of the franchise but I think that this one is my favorite of the bunch or, at least, alongside the first one. The second one was also good but it took out some things that made the first chapter such a roller-coaster of a ride.
But enough of the past, let's talk of the present and the present is fucking awesome. The movie starts exactly when the second one ended and, the first 20-30 minutes of the movie are action packed, never letting the guard down even for one minute and that alone deserves the price of admission.
If you haven't seen the first two, which I strongly recommend, here's a bit of a synopsis for ya: super-Assassin John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is on the run after killing a member of the international assassin’s guild, and with a $14 million price tag on his head, he is the target of hit men and women everywhere.
So, you get what you expect and want out of a John Wick movie, which is awesome fight choreography, non-stop, crazy action and extreme violence and a more deeper understanding of the characters and this world of assassins. What's different with this one compared with the other two is that the action and the fight choreography are amped up to a higher level, more complicated and much more tough to execute but they pulled did of. It looks amazing!
Sure, some of the scenes are down right ridiculous but in a good and fun way and it does not annoy or take the focus from the story and the main plot. But, on one or two occasions, the movie depicts John Wick as a superhero, an invincible killing machine which cannot be killed no matter what you do to him, which does detract a bit from humanity, mortality and the way he was depicted in the first movie. There are some breathable moments, despite what others say but, although breathable the tension is still in that air, very much present so, you would be still on the edge of your seat.
Cast, awesome as always, Keanu Reeves proves the third time that he was born to play this role, Mark Dacasscos, very nice to see him again and being a worthy opponent for John. Halle Berry makes her appearance as well, which was a nice addition, alongside the dogs as well. Plus, the most badass scene of the movie, which goes on for like 20 minutes I think, involves John, Berry's character and the dogs. That scene was one of the great action set pieces I have seen in a modern day action movie.
Overall, it has pieces from the first and second movie combined but it can easily stand on its own. Personally, for me, this is the better sequel. Cannot wait for the 4th chapter, July 2021. 8.8/10
OK guys, this was the review for this one. Some more coming, for Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Lego Movie: The Second Part. Until then, take care, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing!
