Hello guys and welcome back for another round of movie reviews with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies and that's OK!
So, everybody that knows me knows that I very much enjoy comedies and sci-fi movies, among other genres but when these two genres are merged together, it can create something truly awesome. Plus, if you ad to that 2 protagonists that work very well together and have good chemistry, it's a win. Also, if one of those protagonists is Will Smith, it gets even better.
HA HA! You thought I was talking about this MIB movie but no, I was talking about the original Men in Black from 1997, with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. I will get to this one in a minute.
The first MIB movie was a roller coaster of fun gags, some good action, a nice blend between comedy, action and sci-fi, with good humor and good performances. Two great leads, who play off each other really well, I mean, this was a good movie. I really enjoyed it.
I cannot say the same thing about the sequels though, although the third one has some redeemable quality to it. The second one I hated, it's a bad movie. And so we arrive at the new one.
A bit of a synopsis for you before I dive in: The Men in Black have always protected the Earth from the scum of the universe. Is this new adventure, they tackled the biggest, most global threat to date: a mole in the Men in Black organization.
To tell you the truth, I did not like the movie. Actually, I was a bit disappointed with it because it did not have that same level of fun, humor and action that the first one had. It's not as funny, it has some good jokes and some good humor here and there but not enough to get me laughing.
The action works most of the time, special effects are way more improved in this one, of course but the movie is very predictable, you can see how the mole reveal is going to play out from the beginning of the movie so there is no surprise and no real stakes in this movie, especially from the viewers perspective.
There are some good things, the chemistry between Thompson and Hemsworth is there 100%, they play off each other very well and they genuinely seem to have fun in these roles. You can see that the chemistry in the movie is also in real life because I saw at the interviews promoting the movie and they get along very well. Of course, that chemistry began with the movie Thor: Ragnarok. Another good thing is the different locations in which the action takes place which was a welcoming addition because, in the other 3 movies, the action only occurred only in New York so it was a nice change of scenery.
Overall, the movie did not work for me in many ways, I was not entertained by it, except for 2 or 3 scenes. You can have a bit of fun but the movie is not memorable at all, it is very forgettable and they should let of this franchise already. Or maybe a reboot or a TV Show. 5.8/10
OK guys, that is my review for this one. I would like to do a review for the Dumbo remake and Once Upon a Deadpool plus some other movies. I just hope I will have the time. Anyway, until then, take care, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing!
