Hello guys and welcome back for another round of movie reviews with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies!
So, for today's review, we are going a few months in the past, when this movie came out, in April I think and, unfortunately I did not have time to post this review and, also, it still needed some work but I finally finished it but, before I dive in, I will post a little of a synopsis for you guys because that is how we do things here at Movie Nerd, whether you saw the movie or you didn't but, mostly, if you didn't because it makes more sense :))
In “Mortal Kombat,” MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld's Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family's safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?
A bit more of a synopsis that I intended because you guys already have seen this movie but, like I said, that is how we do things here at Movie Nerd.
So, I think that everybody knows about the first Mortal Kombat movie that set the trend for video game adaptations, remaining, in my opinion at least, still the best video game adaptation to date and we can eliminate Free Guy from this equation because that is not a video game adaptation per se. The only one that came close to be the best video game adaptation was last year's Sonic The Hedgehog movie. So how is this new version stack up against the original?
Well, one thing is for sure, the graphics and the special effects are, obviously, improved beyond measure, with one exception, and the violence is very graphic and very intense, exactly how a Mortal Kombat adaptation should be.
In the story department is not much and it also feels a bit rushed but, for a movie like this, you can really turn your brain off and just enjoy the mayhem and carnage. The fight sequences are very good and very well choreographed, the beginning and the end of the movie being reasons enough for that statement, mainly because of the fights between Sub-Zero and Scorpion. The acting is mainly not that good but the actors just tried with what script was handed to them.
The main issue with this movie is that the main tournament is not present here and that is why this movie feels like an introduction or a prequel for the main movie, which is going to be the sequel because a sequel is definitely coming, with the promise of bringing Johnny Cage, who was absent entirely from this movie, which was another issue that some fans had with this version.
Overall, in my opinion, this movie shows a lot of promise of things to come because it elevated the Mortal Kombat franchise a bit. It was clearly made, mostly, for the fans of the games and the original movie as well, which I am, and I think that most of the fans were satisfied with the end product. I was pleased to see a good adaptation for this game again and I really enjoyed it but I am hoping to see the tournament and not some preparations for it in the second movie. Very violent, with some great special effects, except for the look for Goro, which I think the design from the original is slightly better and some intense fight sequences. Also, a little addition here, I noticed that Sub-Zero and Scorpion are the main characters of the movie, with the others being more of a supporting roles. Because it begins with them and it ends with them and it felt like this was Sub-Zero and Scorpion's story. Anyway, maybe it's just me but I felt that I should ad that to the review. 7/10
OK guys, that was my review for this missed one. Next up I will tackle the movie Spiral the spin-off for the Saw movies and I am hoping to post the review until I leave for Bucharest on Wednesday but, if I don't manage to do that, I will post, if I can, while I am there and I will also try to do some other reviews as well, if I can. No promises there but, until then, take care, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing!
