Hello guys and welcome back for another round of movie reviews with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies and that's OK!
So, this review was not on my schedule but I have decided to make a little room for it because I am a big Pokemon fan since I was a wee little kid. I watched the cartoon, all the movies that came out before this and, also, played Pokemon Go and still playing it so I was very excited for this movie and to see how a live action Pokemon movie would look and feel like for me and if it would satisfy the inner child that I have.
My opinion after these commercials and when I say commercials I actually mean the synopsis of the movie: the story begins when ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.
Although I was not expecting this adaptation to be as weird and bizarre as the one which I was accustomed with, I still enjoyed the direction in which they have decided to take this property and it's characters. Although is not Ash and his friends, the new human characters are as good and less annoying actually. It's basically a detective story, hence the title so do not expect much in terms of Pokemon battles because there aren't as much but the one that is, very well crafted. They touch a bit on the Pokemon training and catching them all at the beginning which I liked. The movie has plenty of humor, which works almost all the time but some of the jokes where a bit inappropriate for a Pokemon movie and felt a bit odd and out of place. At least that's my opinion.
The design of the Pokemon's is incredible. The details of every single Pokemon is astonishing and the ones that created Sonic for the live action movie that is coming should take some notes from this movie on how to properly design a animated character into a live action one.
Some say that Ryan Reynolds was not a good choice for the voice of Pikachu but I say different. I very much liked Reynolds voicing my favorite Pokemon and you can see that he brought a bit of his trade mark Deadpool charm, with some of the jokes and some quick quips.
Overall, as a Pokemon fan, some of you may not like the approach they took when making this movie but, if you are a true Pokemon fan like I am, you can surely be satisfied of the humor, the emotion that goes one with these characters, with a bit of drama thrown in there for good measure with the whole daddy issues plot line, some good special effects, some good sound effects that remind you of the game and a good story with a welcoming ending. Also, the original theme song can be herd a couple of times but I would have wanted for Pikachu to say Pika Pika a bit more that he says. Also, the poke ball looks great. The whole movie looks great and I was very satisfied with the end result. A truly good buddy cop movie or, in this case, buddy detective movie. 7.5/10
OK guys, that is my review for this one. Stay tuned for more review to come. The new Child's Play is on the way. Until then, take care, stay movie nerdy and keep on movie reviewing!
