Hello guys and welcome back for another round of movie reviews with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies and that's OK!
So, I did have the opportunity to see Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, like I said and do a review about it but I did manage to see the 5th entry in the Rambo franchise and was able to put together a little review for it.
Before I dive in, here is a bit of a synopsis for you lot: almost four decades after he drew first blood, Sylvester Stallone is back as one of the greatest action heroes of all time, John Rambo. Now, Rambo must confront his past and unearth his ruthless combat skills to exact revenge in a final mission.
This particular series is not one of my favorite but I enjoyed the previous movies, even the third one, which is considered to be the worst of the bunch. After seeing this one, number 3 still in the worst because, although it puts, again, explicit and graphic violence above the character story and development, it's still has some depth and some emotion to it.
First of all, you can clearly see that this movie is a mash up between the movie Taken and Home Alone. The first bit is inspired by the first Taken, with the well known story of a combat experienced man trying to save a young girl from getting hurt. It's a very well known plot from the Liam Neeson movie and, also, Man on Fire, the Denzel Washington action movie from 2004. We get to the last bit because there is no middle bit and we arrive into Home Alone territory, with one minor difference: here, the traps can really kill you.
Second of all and, seeing that I arrived at the action portion of the movie, it's a good time to talk a bit about that part. The setup montage is good and what comes next is even better because the level of violence displayed here kinda tops the one from the 4th movie. It's very grisly, it's very graphic and entertaining. I mean, the guys that get killed are some of the worst people ever so you don't feel any remorse or emotion their demise. The traps are cleverly made and you can see that they returned Rambo in his element, hunting these guys down, seeking his revenge in the process.
The movie does have some emotion and a bit of depth but that is towards the end, decreasing the level of emotional impact. A thing that bothered some people is that, in the, I think, middle part of the movie, Rambo is not acting like an intelligent and skilled hunter, he is just going half cocked, without a logical plan and things take a bit of an ugly turn. I did not have a problem with that, I just attributed to the rage that he was feeling in that moment, which could have affected his thinking. In the last act, he is back to doing what he does best so, I was satisfied.
Overall, it was not a bad movie, some say that it is an embarrassing one, I don't why but I enjoyed it. Stallone still has it and he offers a good performance. The action is good, although it is compiled from a lot of fast cuts, shaky cam and a bunch of zoom ins that can really fuck with your eyes and head. It's not a movie that you would need to see in the theater, unless you are a massive fan of this series but you can wait and watch it online or on Netflix because it feels like a Netflix movie. 6/10
OK guys, that is my review for this one. Next up, I hope I can go and see Ad Astra, so, hopefully, that is the review that will come next. Until then, take care, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing!
