Hello guys and welcome back for another round of movie reviews with Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies!
Today is my first review for a movie that came out in 2020 and the first disappointment of the year for me as well.
I don't understand this movie's existence. Why it was made? What was the reason? A new version for a new audience? Because I don't see anyone that would like to see this movie at least one more time. It ignores the stuff that happened after the 2004 remake and it kinda connects to that particular movie but in a very small and pettit way.
Before I start the actual review, a bit of a synopsis for you: a detective investigates a murder scene that has a connection to a case that her new partner handled in the past. The killings occurred in a haunted house that passes on a ghostly curse to those who dare enter it. Soon, the curse spreads to a terminally ill woman and her husband, and another unsuspecting couple who were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
So, like I said, the movie is kinda connected to the 2004 version but in a very loose way. There are only 2 little connections throughout the movie that can make you say that this one is a direct sequel for the other one but it feels like a standalone movie rather than a sequel to the 2004 version.
Let me tell you something else. If I saw the 2004 version again, it will not scare me as it did when I first saw it because a lot of better horror movies have been released in the past decade. Also, I am not saying that this new version is scarier than the one from 2004 and it's definitely not better. There is no suspense, no sense of terror to this movie. All you have are some cheap and worn out jump scares that don't do much. Granted, one or two of them are fairly good and scary but the others you can it coming and they don't pay off.
The movie also relies on graphic and disturbing images and a lots and lots of gore because doing the same thing all over again is the way of Hollywood these days. It is also very cliched. Plus, the story is divided into three time plains and it goes back and forth which is kinda annoying and, when the story comes together, it does not pay off. Not in the slightest.
Overall, it is a dull and dreary remake or sequel or reboot or whatever it is and it wastes so much potential and a very good cast. No one asked for this. We have all been cursed with this movie :)) 2.5/10
OK guys, that is my review for this one. If you haven't see it yet, don't see it because it's not worth it. Next up, something something I don't know :)) Until then, take care, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing!
