Hello guys and welcome, once again, to Movie Nerd, a place where you can be nerdy about movies and that's OK with it!
So, because I very much liked Get Out, I was so curious on what Jordan Peele will bring up with his next movie and, to tell you the truth, he did not disappoint at all.
Before I dive, a bit of a synopsis: Accompanied by her husband, son and daughter, Adelaide Wilson returns to the beachfront home where she grew up as a child. Haunted by a traumatic experience from the past, Adelaide grows increasingly concerned that something bad is going to happen. Her worst fears soon become a reality when four masked strangers descend upon the house, forcing the Wilsons into a fight for survival. When the masks come off, the family is horrified to learn that each attacker takes the appearance of one of them.
Like Get Out, this movie also has some social commentary, some deep symbolism about how see each other or do we even know who he are, on the inside and the outside as well. What is our identity? Are we the hero? Or the villain? Maybe we think we are the hero but, deep down, we have the suspicion that we actually are the opposite.
Those are some of the ideas that Peele touches in this movie but he does it in a way that keeps you at the edge of your seat with a good dose of suspense, tension, some good twists along the way but, for the ones that pay more attention, you can guess the end as far as the beginning of the movie. I did guessed the ending so, for me, that was a bit of a buzzkill. The ending is good, it's a good twist but, if you can figure it out, it kinda looses it's momentum. My advice, don't try to guess the ending.
The way the story was constructed reminded, a bit, of The Purge, the first one, The Strangers and Funny Games, because of that hole assault on the family home type of thing. It's good some elements from all three movies but the concept, as a whole, is good, fresh and new.
Also, there are some little hints at the beginning that makes you understand the story a bit better and it all comes full circle at the end. Plus, some cool Easter eggs on past movies from the 70's and 80's.
The cast is great but, the stand out, without a doubt, was Lupita Nyong'o, who steals the spotlight with her duel performance, that is both riveting, terrifying and emotional.
Overall, another great horror movie from Jordan Peele. It's got terror, it's got horror elements, albeit some of it are cliches that you find in all horror movies, making it a bit predictable in some occasions, which are very few so it did not bother me that much. It has suspense, tension, a good concept and story, some awesome performances resulting in a well crafted movie. 8.2/10
